EVERYTHING TO KNOW ABOUT TANZANIA SAFARI FOODS

The staple food is a significant part of the diet for many individuals in Tanzania. Ugali in Swahili is a hearty dish made from maize flour, commonly enjoyed with meat and fish stews or vegetables. The majority of ugali’s ingredients consist of carbohydrates, making it a satisfying and filling meal for Tanzanians.

Indeed, Tanzania safaris do offer vegan options for those with dietary preferences. We Cab Tours and Safari and our partner restaurants and lodges prioritize catering to a wide range of dietary preferences. It’s important to let our team know about any dietary preferences or restrictions when planning.

Tanzanians have a strong affinity for their meat. Beef, chicken, and goat are some of the top choices. People commonly use flavours like cumin, coriander, and ginger to enhance the taste of these grilled or stewed meats. Seafood enthusiasts will be delighted by the wide variety of fresh fish and shellfish available in Tanzania’s coastal regions, including prawns, squid, kingfishes, and octopus

Of course, Tanzania has some must-try street food. From savoury dishes like mishkaki (grilled meat skewers) and samosas to sweet treats like mandazi (fried dough) and vitumbua (coconut rice cakes), the street food scene in Tanzania offers a wide variety of flavours and textures to tantalize your taste buds.

Our Tanzania Cultural Tours offer a variety of immersive experiences, including cooking classes where you can learn how to prepare traditional Tanzanian dishes. Not only will you learn new culinary skills, but you will also have the opportunity to connect with local chefs and learn about the cultural significance of different ingredients and cooking techniques. Cooking classes are a wonderful way to deepen your understanding of Tanzanian culture and create lasting memories of your trip.

In Tanzania, it is customary to use the hand when eating, as it is believed to enhance the flavor of the food. The second practice involves sharing food with others as a sign of hospitality and goodwill. Additionally, it’s customary to serve guests first and express gratitude before they start their meal. Finally, it’s considered polite to consume all the food on your plate as a gesture of gratitude for the prepared meal.

Breakfast in Tanzania is usually a simple meal that includes tea, coffee, or spiced milk, along with mandazi or chapati. Tanzania provides a delightful breakfast spread, featuring a variety of easily accessible fresh fruits such as papaya, mango, and passion fruit. For a heartier breakfast option, locals savour a plate of rice porridge known as uji or a bowl of hot millet porridge called ugali

Lunch in Tanzania is the main meal of the day and often consists of a satisfying stew or curry. One beloved dish is mishikaki, featuring marinated beef, chicken, or fish skewers grilled over an open flame and served with a side of zesty tomato sauce. Matoke, a flavorful dish of mashed green bananas, onions, tomatoes, and spices, is another delicious lunch option. Tanzanians also enjoy their pilau, a flavorful rice dish prepared with a blend of spices, vegetables, and meat.

WHAT OUR CLINTS SAY

I am not even sure where to start because everything was beyond perfect. Customer service was the best. The entire team took extremely good care of us. We hiked and in one day we saw a lot of chimpanzees in the park. Juma organized it on very short notice and Abbas is very knowledgeable about the park and took us to the best routes. Thanks a lot, guys!

I did a 3-days-2-nights trekking with We Cab Tours in Gombe National park. What can I say? Asante sana! The trip was just super perfect! I saw many chimpanzees (it’s not guaranteed for sure because as you know how wildlife is sometimes). BUT I did it in the end of March when officially is off-season and I still saw them. The weather was really good too. Juma, the owner and his employees are super nice people. I always felt safe and understood. Moreover everything was on time what is really rare to get – believe me. I would do it with this organization again for sure! And I will do some other trips when I am again in Tanzania

Juma, thank you for your hospitality and flexibility during our travel to Zanzibar. I had an amazing and beautiful experience because of your team. Your team arrived early at the RUI to pack our luggage in the van and patiently waited until we were ready to leave the hotel as were saying goodbye to our friends we met on the trip. I appreciate the time you took on our last day of the visit in Stone town prior to leaving for the airport. You helped us negotiate our fabrics and clothing so that we received the best price

Juma, Makame, Brendah and the We Cab family were the absolute best! They treated us like family, they were on time for every day we booked. They want out of their way to provide the best experience. When we booked the “scary ferry” ride to Dar es Salem, we were treated to a complimentary upgrade. We missed the stop in Nairobi where we were supposed to give donations to an orphanage and they made sure to find a reputable one in Zanzibar, and had one of their guides Brendah, translate on our behalf. I truly felt more like family than a client. I will definitely return to Zanzibar and use We Cab for all my transportation and tour needs.
