Beginning at 3,600 meters above sea level, the Shira Route presents significant challenges compared to other Kilimanjaro routes, primarily due to its steep elevation gain and minimal acclimatization period. This situation is not suitable for individuals who lack experience in high-altitude trekking. Many local providers don't even present this route as a choice. For seasoned adventurers seeking a more demanding and less populated path to the summit of Kilimanjaro, the Shira Route presents an appealing option.

Nonetheless, this path provides breathtaking vistas of the Shira Plateau and the Western Breach of Kilimanjaro. Even with its difficulties, certain hikers opt for the Shira route due to its quieter paths and distinctive landscapes. With adequate acclimatization and preparation, adventurers can navigate the challenges and reach the pinnacle of Africa's tallest mountain

On the initial day on the mountain, climbers start their ascent from 11,800 feet (3,600 m) and will rest for the night at the same altitude at Simba Camp. Subsequently, the path converges with Lemosho at Shira 2 and continues along the southern circuit route, navigating beneath the Southern Ice fields before reaching the summit from Barafu. The Mweka route functions as the pathway for descent.

While Shira has its own unique charm and appeal, we suggest opting for Lemosho due to its advantageous high-altitude starting point. Climbers may encounter altitude-related symptoms on the first day because of inadequate acclimatization. Shira climbers should have faith in their ability to adjust effectively.

You can book Shira for a private climb that lasts seven to eight days. The eight-day itinerary includes a stop at Moir Hut on the third day, followed by a trek to Lava Tower on the fourth day. Nonetheless, in general, Shira is not recommended

The montane forest, which is home to a diverse array of fauna, including elephants, bushbucks, and Colobus monkeys, is the starting point for climbers.
