Located south of Kigoma Town in the remote western region of Tanzania, lies the stunning Mahale Mountains National Park. Similar to its sister park (Gombe) to the north, this area hosts some of Africa’s remaining wild chimpanzees, which have grown familiar with human presence since the 1960s due to a Japanese Research Project. This destination stands out as one of the most distinctive safari experiences on the continent.
The lakeshore in Mahale features a stunning white-powedery sand beach, framed by impressive mountains adorned with lush tropical vegetation. The forest buzzes with life as vibrant blue butterflies dance above the flowing streams. The park features a variety of ecosystems, including grasslands, rainforests, alpine bamboo, and woodlands. Approximately 50 distinct species of animals inhabit the area, with monkeys and apes being the most prevalent. A journey to Mahale feels like entering a serene haven where the beauty of nature takes center stage.

Upon your arrival at Kigoma airport, our driver will be there to greet you and take you directly to one of the finest hotels we have arranged for your stay. Prepare yourself for tomorrow’s itinerary, featuring a journey to Mahale National Park. If time permits, you may choose to enjoy an evening in town engaging in optional activities like the Kigoma Town Tour, a visit to the Dr. Livingstone Memorial, snorkeling, or scuba diving.

Our 4×4 will transport you through breathtaking landscapes along the Lake Tanganyika Rift Valley, ultimately leading to either Lagosa or Katumbi, contingent upon the season. From this point, you will board our boat for the journey to Mahale Mountains National Park. Around midday or in the evening, you will arrive at the park. Engage in sport fishing, take a leisurely boat cruise, or soak up the sun at the shore for the remainder of the day.

After breakfast, you will follow a trail that will lead you to the chimps’ location. Kindly note that the park has steep terrain and boasts a lush forest teeming with a variety of wildlife. Delight in your stroll as you discover the wonders of the natural world. Make sure to come back for lunch before you set off on your evening adventure.

Following breakfast, you will set out on another day of trekking to find the chimpanzees. Kindly remember that the park features hilly terrain and a lush forest, home to a diverse array of wildlife. Delight in your walk as you discover the marvels of the natural world. Come back for lunch before continuing your travels later in the afternoon. With an entire day at your disposal, you have the flexibility to opt for hiking at a later time.

After breakfast, your final hike will take you into a deep forest to search for chimpanzee groups. Remember, you must exit the park at the same time you entered it. You will board a boat to Lagosa, where we will meet our driver for the return journey to Kigoma Town. Stay the night at your favorite hotel. You may stay at Kigoma for a few more days or connect with Gombe or Katavi National Parks.

Enjoy your breakfast, then connect with your driver for a smooth transfer to Kigoma Airport, ensuring you catch your departure flight back to Dar es Salaam or your next destination.
